Navrasa, the classical nine emotive states, an abiding contribution to aesthetics by the Indian mind, is the theme of the painting exhibition, Sawan Navrasa, exploring the nine emotive states of the grandiose season. In an unique exploration, we merge the maha-theory of Navrasa with experiences of the monsoon to present to you nine different emotive experiences of the monsoon, from Adbhuta (wonder), to the Shringar (love), Bhayanakam (fear) to Bibhatsam (disgust), Raudram (anger) to Hasyam (laughter), Viram (heroic) to Karunyam (compassion) and Shantam (silent).

We present some videos which explore the aesthetic theory of Navrasa in traditional dance forms like Bharatnatyam.

In this video, ‘Padmabhushan’ Smt. Kalanidhi Narayanan describes navarasas, the nine basic emotions as experienced by Shakthi, the divine consort of Shiva. Shakthi is ‘shrungara’ personified when she sets her eyes on Shiva; all other men create ‘bibatsa’; She shows ‘raudra’ when she thinks of Ganga, the ‘other’ woman in her life; hearing Shiva’s exploits, she displays ‘adbutha’; she exudes ‘bhayanaka’ stirred by the snakes encircling Shiva’s body; she is an embodiment of feminine valour or ‘veera’; she is all ‘haasya’ in the company of her man Shiva.

Reflecting an aesthetic of pluralism and multi-hued celebration, the idea of Navrang is intrinsic to our festivals. Reviving this almost forgotten idea seems like a befitting tribute to nine years of The Monsoon Festival.

TMF9 – A curatorial overview

Red Earth’s The Monsoon Festival celebrates its 9th edition in 2014. A well established cultural festival in Delhi, it aims to celebrate the magic of the Indian monsoon with the old and the new, reviving forgotten traditional cultural practices and pioneering contemporary creative expressions.

The monsoon is not just a season, but a complex cultural being, bringing alive the fertility of the Indian mind – in art expressions ranging from visual art to poetry, music to drama; lived culture including festivals, food and other celebratory elements; and the richness of human emotional response.

From abstract musings to a celebration of the lush languishing landscapes of the monsoon, the flora that grows greener by the day, the fauna that cannot contain itself; to its effect on the human race (farmers, lovers, and others…); the divine mythologies of the rain and environment; and the new experience of the monsoon in urban centres with its often anti-thetical narrative of monsoon as a nuisance – the season connects us to the magic of the cosmos, and brings together everything – from a raindrop to the vast ocean in this mad unalloyed dance of joy.

The Monsoon Festival is an inter-disciplinary, cross-arts, multi-sensory celebration of the varied awakenings and experiences of the Indian monsoon, the king of Indian seasons.

The monsoon festival of Teej celebrates fertility, nature and community life. In Jaipur, Teej acquires a special regal touch with public processions involving the whole city in a riot of colour and zest. The idol of Teej mata, goddess Parvati travels through the city and lord Shiva’s majestic presence completes this festival of union.

Our teej special tour to Jaipur is designed to soak in this special celebration of colour, life, and togetherness, as well as a to give you a flavour of this grand city with its teeming markets, rich food, diverse craft traditions and the extraordinary Krishna temples of the city.

The two day tour will include:
• Walks through the walled city of Jaipur (18th century)
• Shopping in the bazaars for Jaipur specials
• Exploring teej food, shringaar (mehendi, and other adornments)
• Partaking of the glorious Teej processions
• Darshans at prominent Vaishnava temples
